Animation Workshop
The initial goal of the animation workshop is to contribute to the acquaintance and intercultural dialogue between the refugee children and the local children of Rhodes. Using cinema, music and literature as educational tools, the workshop aims at making the children (8 to 12 years old) understand and experience the concepts and meanings of friendship, togetherness, collaboration and inter-culturalism.
Through a series of stories obtained from children's literature and accompanied by classical guitar, children transform their experiences into music and images .The outcome of the children's teamwork is the production of an animated short film.
The animation workshop took place at the 10th Elementary School of Rhodes in March 2017 and it was attended by thirty-three children (ages ten to twelve), both refugee and local. During the four sessions of the workshop in the school’s classroom, the students became familiar with the cinematic technique of the animation. Moreover, and accompanied by classical guitar, they were introduced to the narration of short stories with focus on human rights. Finally, they created a series of short animation films through artworks made by the children. The outcome of the workshop is the animation movie.
The idea, planning and implementation of the workshop derived from the collaboration of the historian-educator Kostas Korres and the soloist of classical guitar Antonis Liopiris. It is based on a similar workshop that took place in Hamburg, Germany in November 2016 addressed to refugee children and local elementary children. This latter workshop was part of the 1st phase of the START-Create Cultural Change fellowship program.
